In Tudor times in England purple was a colour for
clothes that was only allowed for royalty or the very wealthy as it was a dye
colour that was rare and difficult to obtain. The colour was derived from the
mucus of a rare species of sea snail found in the eastern Mediterranean and off
the Atlantic coast of Morocco. The dye was originally discovered by the ancient
Phoenicians in the city of Tyre (modern day Lebanon, south of Beirut). The yarn
used in this garment has a modern-day dye which has undergone testing for
harmful chemicals and is an assurance of safety and non-toxicity (Oeko- Tex).
